우리는 옷차림의 중요성에 대해 굳이 이야기하지 않아도 알고 있습니다. 오늘은 왜 옷을 잘 입어야 하는지, 왜 남자들이 꾸며야 하는지에 대한 진부한 이야기가 아니라 다른 주제를 꺼내보고자 합니다.
대부분의 매력적인 사람들이 가진 공통점이 있습니다. 패션뿐만 아니라 자신만의 ‘라이프스타일’을 가지고 있다는 것이죠. 왜 라이프스타일이 중요할까요? 사실 패션은 라이프스타일 안에 속해 있습니다. 개인의 철학이나 취향에 영향을 가장 많이 받는 부분이고, 이것으로 인해 패션 또한 형성되기 때문입니다. 이런 과정을 통해 라이프스타일과 패션이 자연스럽게 어우러질 때 캐릭터가 형성됩니다. 그리고 아이덴티티가 명확히 느껴지는 인물들을 우리는 주로 매력적인 사람이라고 말하곤 합니다. 그 인물의 생김새와 얼마나 옷을 잘 입는 지와는 상관 없이 말이죠.
그러나 우리는 이것을 놓칠 때가 종종 있습니다. 패션에 빠지게 되면 저가의 아이템들로 연출하기는 어려운 부분들이 있다 보니 점점 더 비싸고 좋은 아이템들을 소비하게 됩니다. 이러다 보면 비중이 한쪽으로 치우쳐져 라이프스타일을 간과하기 쉽습니다. 마치 우리의 패션이 그러하듯이, 견고한 라이프스타일을 갖추는 것은 단기간에 이뤄낼 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 많은 시행착오와 고찰을 통해 옷장을 꾸려 나가는 것처럼 오랜 기간 경험을 통해서 형성되기 때문입니다.

Well, I've been lucky to be part of this company for quite a few years now. Along the journey, I've delved deep into the world of home furnishing, learning so much about how people live through these experiences. Exploring my curiosities has taken me beyond just home furnishing—I've had the chance to travel to multiple countries, witnessing the diverse ways different cultures live. It's been truly fascinating because, you know, I've always had this keen interest in people and culture.
Q. 부기홀리데이의 박상유 디렉터와 인연이 있는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 두 분의 첫 만남에 대해 말씀해주실 수 있을까요?
Q. I understand that you have a relationship with Park Sang-U, the director of Boogieholiday. Could you share your memories of the first time you met him?
우린 서울에서 라이프스타일 스토어를 운영 중이던 지인을 통해 만났습니다. 박상유 디렉터가 부기홀리데이를 시작하겠다는 비전과 배경을 설명했던 첫 만남은 선명하게 기억납니다. 그의 브랜드에 제가 시각적으로 잘 어울릴 것 같았는지, 추후 부기홀리데이가 준비 되고 나면 모델로 참여해 줄 수 있는지 제안했습니다. 당시 놀라웠던 점은 그의 비전, 스타일링, 그리고 콘셉트가 저의 가치관과 매우 밀접해 있다는 것이었습니다.
We met through a mutual friend who used to own a lifestyle store here in Seoul. I vividly recall our first meeting when Sang-U explained his vision for starting a brand called Boogieholiday, sharing the background of what he aimed to achieve. In the midst of our conversations, he approached me, mentioning the possibility of modeling for the brand once it was ready, as he thought I would be a good fit visually. What struck me was how closely his vision, styling, and concept aligned with my own ideas and values.
Q. 시간이 흘러 부기홀리데이가 오프라인 매장과 함께 세상에 나오게 되었습니다. 우리는 부기홀리데이의 첫 룩북을 호라시오와 함께하고 싶었고, 매장에서 미팅을 가졌습니다. 모델로서 작업에 참여하는 것은 처음이었을 텐데 어떤 경험이었나요?
Q. Over time, Boogieholiday came to life with the addition of offline stores. We were eager to shoot the first our lookbook with Horacio, and we had a meeting at the store. This must have been your first experience participating as a model. How was the experience for you personally?
패션 모델이나 촬영에 참여해 본 적이 전혀 없었습니다. 그래서 정확히 무엇을 해야 할지 몰랐지만 이미 상유를 알고 있었기 때문에 이에 과감히 도전하기로 했습니다. 촬영은 전체적으로 즐거운 경험이었습니다. 모두가 자연스럽고 흥미로운 분위기를 조성해 주었습니다. 촬영을 떠나서 부기홀리데이의 스타일링 또한 매력적으로 다가왔습니다. 부기홀리데이가 전개하는 패션은 저의 개인적인 스타일과도 일치했습니다. 촬영 동안 음악과 의류에 관한 재미있는 대화를 나눴기 때문에 즐거운 경험이었습니다.
I had never been part of any fashion or model shoot before. Not knowing exactly what to expect, I decided to take the plunge, especially since I already knew Sang-U. To my surprise, it turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The entire team exuded enthusiasm, creating a natural and exciting atmosphere. Beyond the shooting itself, I found the styling of Boogieholiday particularly appealing. The fashion aligned comfortably with my personal style, not too far off the mark. Throughout the shoot, we engaged in fun conversations about music and clothing, making it an overall delightful experience.
Q. 패션에 관심이 있으신 걸로 알고 있습니다. 선호하는 스타일과 그에 대한 이유를 설명 부탁 드립니다.
Q. I noticed your interest in fashion. I am curious about the style you prefer and the reasons behind your choice.
제가 선호하는 스타일은 주로 미국 복식과 연관되어 있습니다. 특히 1950-60년대의 클래식한 룩에 끌리곤 합니다. 빈티지 복장에도 관심이 있는데, 고등학교 시절부터 시작되어 지금껏 제 취향에 녹아 들어있습니다.
I would say that my preferred style is closely connected to Americana, particularly a more classic look from the 1950s to the 1960s, which I tend to be drawn towards. I’m also interested in vintage clothing, which started in high school, has stuck with me over the years.
Q. 오랜 기간 이케아 디렉터로 일하면서 누구보다 개인의 취향과 라이프스타일에 대해 깊은 탐구가 있었을 것으로 생각됩니다. 자신만의 라이프스타일을 구축하려는 분들에게 어떤 조언을 해 주실 수 있을까요?
Q. I believe you, having worked as a director at IKEA for a considerable time, must have insights toward people's lifestyles. What advice would you offer to those looking to build their own lifestyle?
여러분이 즐겨 하는 것에 초점을 맞추면서 라이프스타일을 만드는 것이 수월하다고 생각합니다. 재즈에 빠져 계신다면 당연히 재즈와 관련된 아이템을 모으기 시작하겠죠. 자신의 관심사를 깊이 파고 컬렉션을 확장하면, 당신이 좋아하는 것들의 배경을 발견할 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, LP 앨범 재킷을 들여다보면 패션, 헤어스타일, 소재, 액세서리 등 다양한 정보를 얻을 수 있습니다. 더 나아가 이미지에서 비슷한 아이템을 찾아보기도 해요. 이렇게 취향의 확장을 통해 일시적인 관심을 넘어 지속 가능한 개인적인 스타일을 구축할 수 있다고 생각합니다.
I find it easier to start building your lifestyle by focusing on something you already enjoy. For example, if you're passionate about jazz, naturally, you would start collecting items related to jazz. By delving into your interests and expanding your collection, you can uncover the background of your favorite things. Take, for instance, by examining the cover image of LP collections, I can explore their fashion, hairstyle, materials, and accessories. Going even deeper, I might try to find similar items from the image. Through this process, I believe we can broaden our tastes, moving beyond mere temporary interests to build a more enduring and personal style.

Q. I'm curious if there's a philosophy that runs through your life or something you've been interested in lately. If so, could you please share how this has influenced both your lifestyle?
저는 항상 제 주목을 끄는 것에 깊은 흥미를 느끼며 다양한 주제에 관심을 기울이곤 합니다. 어떤 날은 빈티지 토이에 빠져 기원과 목적을 공부하고, 가능한 경우에는 수집까지 할 만큼 빠져들기도 합니다. 그러고는 빈티지 티키와 같은 문화에 몰두하여 그 시대와 관련된 미학을 이해하려 노력하기도 합니다.
I've always found myself deeply interested in various topics, delving into whatever captures my attention at the moment. It could be vintage toys one day, where I immerse myself in learning everything about their origins, purpose, and, of course, attempting to collect them when feasible. The next moment, I might be engrossed in cultural movements, such as vintage tiki, seeking to understand the aesthetic associated with that era.
저의 철학은 영원한 호기심을 유지하는 데 중점을 두고 있는 것 같습니다. 언제나 탐험하고 발견하며 세상에 대해 더 많이 배우고 싶어하는 것이죠. 이 철학은 제 인테리어 취향에도 큰 영향을 미치고, 제가 탐험으로 발견한, 저에게 계속해서 영감을 주는 물건에 둘러 쌓이려고 노력합니다.
I suppose my philosophy revolves around maintaining a sense of perpetual curiosity—always exploring, discovering, and wanting to learn more about the world. This philosophy significantly shapes my interior taste, as I strive to surround myself with items that I've explored and that continue to inspire me each day.

Q. Is there an item you value the most?
이모가 주신 작은 사진이 가장 의미가 있을 것 같습니다. 어릴 적 로스앤젤레스에서 찍은 사진인데 그 안에는 저와 사촌이 함께한 모습이 담겨 있습니다. 이모의 집에 보관되어 있었지만, 아시아로 이사를 올 때 저에게 이 사진을 주셨습니다. 이것은 거의 부적과 같이, 이모로부터 저에게 넘어와서 특별한 순간들을 간직할 수 있도록 해주는 것 같습니다.
Definitely, I have this small picture. It features me and my cousin when we were little, taken back in Los Angeles. My aunt always kept it in her house, but she gave it to me when I moved to Asia. It's a precious memory, almost like a charm she passed on to me, ensuring I hold onto those special moments.

Q. Can you provide more insights into the Tiki culture for our readers?
티키 문화는 독특하게 등장해서 1940년대 후반부터 60년대까지 인기를 얻었습니다. 처음에는 폴리네시아 문화를 미국식 해석하여 실제보다는 판타지에 가까웠습니다. 그러다 보니 티키는 폴리네시아 문화를 정확히 대표하기보다 디즈니랜드 같은 폴리네시아로 생각할 수 있습니다.
The Tiki culture emerged as a unique phenomenon that gained popularity in the late 1940s to 60s. Initially, it was an American interpretation of Polynesian culture, more of a fantasy rather than an accurate representation. Think of it as a kind of American Disneyland version of Polynesia, not grounded in real evidence.
비록 실제와는 달랐지만, 티키 문화는 널리 퍼져 일상의 다양한 측면에도 녹아 들었습니다. 그 시기에는 바, 레스토랑, 공원, 심지어 주택 공간까지 티키를 모티브로 할 만큼 흔했습니다. 흥미롭게도, 당시 어린이들은 티키를 멋있다고 여기지 않았습니다. 그들에게 티키는 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 한 요소에 불과했기 때문이죠.
Despite its lack of authenticity, Tiki culture became pervasive, making its way into various aspects of daily life. Tiki-themed bars, restaurants, parks, and even residential spaces became commonplace during that era. Interestingly, children from that time didn't necessarily find Tiki cool; it was just a prevalent aspect of their surroundings.
70-80년대에 들어서며 티키 문화는 서서히 사라졌습니다. 그러나 90년대에 이르자, 사람들은 다시 그 독특한 매력을 발견하고 찾기 시작했습니다. 큰 굴곡을 거쳐오며 티키 문화가 광범위한 유행에서 향수적인 것으로 전환되었습니다.
As the 70s and 80s rolled in, Tiki culture gradually faded away. However, the resurgence of Tiki occurred in the 90s, with people once again discovering and appreciating its unique charm. So, Tiki culture has had its ebbs and flows, transitioning from a widespread trend to a nostalgic revival in more recent times.
Q. 당신이 여가 시간을 어떻게 보내는지 궁금합니다. 평소 무얼 하시나요?
Q. I'm curious about how you usually spend your leisure time and what activities you enjoy.
시간이 생길 때마다 제 관심을 끄는 것에 중점을 두고 다양한 취미를 탐색하는 편입니다. 최근 몇 년간 여가시간에 체인 스티치를 배우고 연습하는데 주력하고 있습니다.
I tend to explore different hobbies whenever I have some free time, focusing on whatever captures my interest at the moment. Lately, I've been working on learning chain stitch embroidery for a few years, dedicating my free moments to practice.
또한, 제 아내와 저는 한국에서의 생활을 진심으로 즐기고 있습니다. 저희에게 큰 즐거움 중 하나는 함께 새로운 장소를 탐험하는 것입니다. 그리고 함께 사람 구경 하는 것 또한 좋아하는데, 도시 내에서 개인들이 어떻게 움직이고 상호 작용하는지 관찰할 수 있습니다.
On another note, my wife and I thoroughly enjoy our time living in Korea. A significant source of joy for us comes from exploring new places together. People-watching has become a favorite activity, providing us with the opportunity to observe how individuals move and interact within the city.

Q. We too are fascinated by chainstitch. Through collaboration, we made a jacket using handle chainstitch embroidery method. We're curious to know how you were introduced to chainstitch and what aspects of it you find particularly attractive.
체인스티치에 대한 관심은 빈티지 의류에 대한 열정에서 시작되었습니다. 다양한 빈티지 의복을 경험하며 스티치에 눈길이 갔고, 그 배경을 파헤치기 시작했습니다. 이 탐험은 결국 취미로 변화했습니다. 그것의 매력은 역사적 맥락뿐만 아니라, 창의적인 측면에서 봐도 무언가를 만들어낼 수 있다는 것이 저에게 큰 매력으로 다가왔습니다.
My interest in chainstitch embroidery grew from a passion for vintage clothing. While exploring various pieces, I stumbled upon stitches on garments and delved into their background. The allure lies not only in the historical context but also in the creative aspect, as the ability to craft something unique as a hobby greatly appeals to me.

Q. Has there been a place recently that has left a strong impression on you?
홍콩은 언제나 제게 강한 인상을 남기는 도시 중 하나입니다. 몇 년 전 처음 방문했을 때의 기억이 여전히 생생한데, 현대와 역사의 조화로움이 정말 놀라웠습니다. 건물들은 울창한 정글과 산들에 둘러싸여 60-70년대의 아름다운 빈티지 분위기를 내뿜습니다. 도시 경관은 언제나 저에게 영화 속 장면처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 여행지 중 하나이며, 방문할 때마다 그 독특한 매력에 영감을 받습니다.
Absolutely, Hong Kong has always been a city that leaves a lasting impact on me. I still vividly remember my first visit a few years ago, and I was truly blown away by the perfect blend of modernity and rich history. The buildings exude a beautiful vintage vibe from the '60s and '70s, surrounded by lush jungle and mountains. The entire cityscape feels like a scene from a movie at all times. It's one of my favorite destinations, and every time I visit, I find myself inspired by its unique charm.
Q. 건축가나 영화감독 등, 특별히 좋아하는 아티스트가 따로 있을까요?
Q. Do you have a favorite artist, like an architect or a movie director?
제가 특히 좋아하는 예술가와 건축가 중 하나는 알렉산더 지라드(Alexander Girard)일 겁니다. 그의 미적 감각은 제게 항상 영향을 미쳤습니다. 제가 본 작품들이 그의 것이라는 걸 몰랐음에도 말이죠. 영화 감독 쪽에서는 시각적 연출에서 뛰어난 업적을 보인 감독들을 선호하는 편입니다. 왕가위(Wong Kar-wai)나 기예르모 델 토로(Guillermo Del Toro)와 같은 분들을 꼽을 수 있을 것 같습니다.
One of my favorite artists and architects would have to be Alexander Girard. His aesthetic has always influenced me, even before I knew it was his work. In terms of movie directors, I tend to gravitate towards those who excel in visual storytelling, such as Wong Kar-wai and Guillermo Del Toro.

알렉산더 지라드는 디자인 분야에 큰 공헌을 한 것으로 유명하며, 허먼 밀러(Herman Miller) 가구 회사의 디자인 담당 총괄로 중추적인 역할을 했습니다. 1952년부터 1973년까지의 임기 동안, 지라드는 회사의 미학과 제품들에 뚜렷한 흔적을 남겼습니다.
Alexander Girard is renowned for his significant contributions to the design world, and he played a pivotal role as the Director of Design for the Herman Miller furniture company. During his tenure from 1952 to 1973, Girard left an indelible mark on the company's aesthetics and products.

Ethnic elements, modernity, and iconic patterns can be seen throughout California where I grew up, and I, too, naturally absorbed Girard's influence growing up in that environment.

Q. I think you have quite a firm set of values and styles. Is there any environment or person that influenced you?
저는 로스앤젤레스에서 자랐습니다. 그리고 부모님은 멕시코에서 온 이민자로, 저에게 노력에 대한 가치관과 항상 가능성을 열어두는 태도를 심어 주셨습니다. 새로운 기회가 찾아올 때마다 저는 그 말씀을 항상 되새깁니다.
I grew up in Los Angeles, and my parents, immigrants from Mexico, instilled in me the value of hard work and the importance of always being open to new possibilities. It's something I carry with me all the time, especially when a new opportunity comes my way.
어린 시절, 놀러 가거나 상점에 가든, 어머니는 제가 옷을 단정히 입지 않으면 나가는 걸 허락하지 않았습니다. 저에게 밖으로 나갈 때마다 자신을 잘 표현해야 한다고 강조하셨고, 저는 그 마음가짐을 오늘까지 계속 간직하고 있습니다. 근처 코너에 있는 가게나 직장에 가든, 저는 이 세계에 저의 모습을 잘 나타내도록 옷을 입으려고 노력합니다.
As a kid, I distinctly remember that whether I was heading out to play or going to the store, my mom never allowed us to leave the house without being properly dressed. She insisted that we present ourselves well every time we stepped outside, and I still carry that mindset with me today. Whether I'm just heading to the corner store or off to work, I aim to dress in a way that represents who I am to the world.

Q. You look incredibly maximalist. Recently, we feel that minimalism continues to be strong in Korea, and as an expert, I wonder what you think about the lifestyle and fashion of Korean people.
미니멀리즘은 한국뿐만 아니라 전 세계적으로 인기를 얻고 있습니다. 저는 개인적으로 미니멀리스트적인 접근법을 받아들이기 어렵습니다. 앞서 말한 대로, 저는 흥미를 자극하거나 경험과 배운 교훈을 상기시키는 물건들로 자신을 둘러싸는 것을 즐깁니다.
Minimalism has gained popularity worldwide, not just in Korea. Personally, I find it challenging to adopt a minimalist approach. As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy surrounding myself with things that pique my interest or remind me of experiences and lessons learned.
한국으로 이주한 이후, 이곳의 사회가 서양보다 더 빠른 속도로 움직이는 걸 느낄 수 있었습니다. 신속히 변하는 환경이라면 패션과 집 인테리어에서 트렌드 기반의 변화가 일어나기 쉽습니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 트렌드를 따라잡으려다 현재의 미적인 측면에만 포커스를 맞추고 역사와 문화적 맥락을 간과하기 쉽습니다.
Since relocating to Korea, I've observed the society's fast pace, arguably even quicker than the Western world. In this swiftly moving environment, there's a tendency for trend-based shifts in both fashion and home interior. Sometimes, in the rush to keep up with trends, we might overlook the history and cultural context that shaped them, focusing more on the current aesthetic.
역사와 연결점을 갖는 것이 저의 가치를 높여주며, 더 깊은 이해와 감상을 돕습니다. 제 개인적인 경험들을 역사적 맥락에 이었을 때 저를 더욱 개인적이고 지속적으로 발전시키는 것 같습니다.
Having a connection to history adds value for me, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation. Incorporating my own experiences into this historical context creates a unique and continually evolving culture in my life.
